As the third-largest gold producer in Africa and the eleventh globally, Mali’s economy relies heavily on gold mining, with this sector accounting for 7% of the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). However, the methods employed in gold extraction often fall short of established standards, leading to significant damage to the environment and local populations. Among these detrimental practices, dredging stands out as a particularly harmful technique.
